This rusty shipwreck has been beached near the mouth of the Gallegos river, a few kilometers away from the small industrial port of Punta Loyola.
Built in Scotland in 1892, the SV Marjory Glen was a state-of-the-art ship for her time, made with an iron hull and propelled by sails. She was carrying over 1,800 tons of coal when it caught fire on September 9, 1911. Sailors tried to extinguish the fire but when it got out of control, they decided to abandon the ship and beach it.
During the Falklands War in 1982, Argentinian pilots used the wreck as target practice. Projectile entrance and exit holes can be seen on both sides of the hull. The pilots managed to master the technique of flying only five meters above sea level, to outwit the radars of the British Navy. This would change aero-naval warfare around the world.
Locals like to hang out in this place on sunny days to enjoy the sea and watch local fauna.
